Service Dogs are a very important addition to a treatment plan. The process to get a Service Dog usually takes between 1 and 3 years. As Service Dogs come with a tremendous amount of responsibility, we help the Veteran with these responsibilities when their personal circumstances preclude them from doing so themselves.
For example, when a Veteran is admitted to the hospital and is not physically able to walk their dog, we offer specially trained volunteers to come to the hospital and walk the Veteran’s dog. We can also bring dogs to the hospital to share some “Puppy Love” to those in need.
Team Courage is working to address the rules and regulations concerning the treatment of Service Dogs while their Veteran is admitted to the VA hospital. When a service member is admitted to the hospital or is otherwise incapacitated, our organization provides a dedicated team of specially trained volunteers to help care for their service dog. Providing this service enables Service Members to concentrate on their recovery, with their Service Dog by their side, providing comfort and support during their times of most critical need.
